Reflexology - what is it and why should I try it?
So what exactly is Reflexology?... What are the benefits and how does it work?... Is it just a fancy foot massage?!..
I found myself asking these questions a few years ago when Reflexology was recommended to me by a close friend. Not particularly holistically minded at the time, (and feeling really under the weather for a good few months) I was willing to try anything to feel better, and I can honestly say it was the best decision I have ever made!.
Reflexology goes back thousands of years to ancient Egypt, China and India and is now one of the UK’s most popular complementary therapies. It’s a safe, painless and pleasurable therapy and works by applying gentle pressure to the reflex points on the feet to bring about a state of deep relaxation. These reflex points correspond to various organs, glands and systems in body and are believed to have a direct effect on their function. By putting you in a relaxed state, reflexology stimulates the body’s own healing processes by opening up neural pathways, rebalancing hormones, increasing circulation, detoxifying the body and boosting the immune system, returning your body to a state of balance and wellbeing.
I often like to describe reflexology as a “natural reboot”. Your body will take what it needs from each session to function properly.
Reflexology can address anything from headaches/migraines, sinus problems, stress and anxiety, digestive issues and hormonal imbalances ( the list goes on!).
What can you expect from your first Reflexology session?
Your very first treatment will take around 90 mins. This is so I can take your medical history, we can talk through your reasons for treatment and then I can adapt the session to suit your individual needs as there could be certain reflexes I may need to concentrate on or avoid completely, depending on your reasons for reflexology.
The most important part of your initial session is the medical consultation. In addition to learning about any past or present medical conditions or operations, we’ll discuss the holistic approach to health (considering your lifestyle as a whole, which includes things like diet, exercise, sleep patterns and stress factors) so you’re not only looking at the symptoms of your ailment but are also discovering the cause. Together we’ll build a picture of your current lifestyle and pin point other areas that could be improved.
After the consultation it’s time to switch off and completely relax. Laying down in the reflexology chair, you’ll be wrapped in a blanket with the lights turned down ( what’s not to like?). I always encourage people to fall asleep but equally if you’d like to talk or ask any questions during your treatment then please feel free… this is YOUR time!.
The treatment itself takes 50 mins, each reflex is gently worked using organic reflexology balm or organic grapeseed oil and any reflexes that are “out of balance” will be revisited during the treatment and discussed at the end before you leave. To complete the session I use soothing massage techniques to provide deep relaxation.
Once your treatment has come to an end, whilst relaxing with a glass of water, we can discuss a treatment plan specific to you, plus areas to work on between treatments which could be anything from small diet changes, breathing techniques, other complementary therapies that I feel would benefit you, hand reflexology points to work on at home, or simply trying to encourage you to take a little more time for yourself!
